The Kentucky Derby is right around the corner and it’s one of the few times when a man really gets to show off his style as much, or even more than a woman. For women it’s all about the hat, the dress is secondary. But for men, it’s all about the suit, the sportcoat and the accessories.

The key is to keep your madras or seersucker modern by opting for a slim fit and mixing it up with a solid color pant or blazer rather than going for a full on suit. Or opting for a red or green seersucker instead of the traditional blue and white stripe. You want southern charm but you don’t want to look like someone’s grandfather.

Oh and don’t forget to accessorize. While the ladies get to show off the elaborate hats, nothing looks classier on a man than a well-made, well-fitted straw fedora.

So whether you’re going to a Derby party or if you’re actually heading to the horses, or if you’re just looking for some ideas for sharp spring style, here are a few of my favs to keep you gents cool in the heat and hot in your seat.
